In a nutshell

During a BBC career spanning 20 years Emma went from documentary director, to Head of Development for Science, TV Controller Factual Commissioning and Director of Digital Transformation for BBCTV.  She cares passionately about the power of content to make a positive difference.

 

Career highlights

As Head of Development Emma transformed the BBC Science department – makers of Walking with Dinosaurs and The Human Body – gaining an unprecedented number of commissions. She led the $33m BBC/Discovery JV, enabling a raft of global landmarks including Planet Earth, Seven Wonders of the Industrial World, and Supervolcano. As BBC TV Controller Factual Commissioning, leading a team across all factual genres, hits included Bake Off, Our War, Wounded, Africa, Star-gazing and Lambing Live. As Director of Digital Transformation, she devised an ambitious ‘content first, platform second’ strategy for scripted and non-scripted including making BBC i-Player a first destination for all audiences.

 

Jo Sermon

In a nutshell

A Business graduate, Jo spent nine years marketing Holsten and Budweiser for Diageo followed by two years at Cable & Wireless (Mercury). Jo joined BBC Studios (fka BBC Worldwide) in 1998 and has held positions in marketing, business development, strategy and investment culminating in her latest roles as Director Factual and Director BBC Earth. 

 

Career highlights

Jo’s BBC career highlights include: creating an international, award-winning History portfolio from scratch; turning Natural History into BBC Studios top genre; risk-investing against the BBC’s first landmark HD/3D/UHD productions; unleashing the power of Top Gear by giving the talent brand equity thus transforming the revenue; revitalising BBC Studios Production’s investment strategy to keep Factual firing on all cylinders; beating Wired and NASA to win the 2015 Science Webby; hitting all launch KPIs for the Earth TV Channel in 45+ countries; rolling content out as world class Giant Screen (IMAX) Films; driving Kids Nature content and establishing BBC Earth as the challenger to Discovery and National Geographic.

 

Cary Wakefieled

Marketing Director

In a nutshell

After five years at Quaker and GSK Cary moved into media as Marketing Director for household name media companies. She has led brand and marketing strategy for big UK brands including Freeview and BBC One and created award-winning campaigns including Sherlock, Luther, Dr Who, Eastenders, Strictly Come Dancing, The Voice, Happy Valley, and Bake Off to name a few.

 

Career highlights

At the BBC Cary helped transform BBC Three from a youth TV channel to an online service, making BBC Three a top tier BBC digital brand, delivering 10% cross-platform reach for 16- 24-year-olds. Also responsible for BBC TV social media, Cary led a review of over 100 accounts resulting in a strategy for rapid growth and innovation to take BBC content to new audiences. With expertise in consumer engagement and digital innovation, she also spearheaded the launch of Freeview Play and corporate rebranding of BBC Worldwide and The Economist Group.

 

Kezi Claydon

In a nutshell

After studying Liberal Arts at University, Kezia developed CSR policies and social media strategies at two highly successful startups. She then went into TV production at the BBC and Sky as Production Assistant, and in 2019 joined On Purpose Group.

 

Career highlights

Kezia worked on Guy Ritchie's Arthur and CBBC’s Ice Stars, the 22nd season of the well-loved BBC drama Silent Witness and Sky and Vertigo Films production of Bulletproof 2. At the health food start-up Modern Baker, Kezia led the social media and web development. At performance clothing brand Shackleton, she produced and implemented sustainability, ethical, environmental and diversity policies. Most recently Kezia has been helping research and develop TV ideas as well as helping market On Purpose Group, where she also manages social media and liaises with key philanthropic and production partners.
